Goin' Home

Remembering Carolyn*

Atchafalaya

It's north I came for gold - and so

I launched a dream long years ago

Hard luck and cold have been my foe

And now- I'm going home

I've lived on beans and bear meat roast

I dug these hills and panned 'em most

But still it hides - "The Golden Ghost"

And now - I'm goin' home

I tried like hell to fill my sack

But still it hides - "The Golden Ghost"

And now - I'm goin' home

I tried like hell to fill my sack

I grubbed this earth and gave it back

But gold's the thing that still I lack

And now - I'm goin' home

I missed the find that made me bold

The north has won - the tale's most told

The winter's come - all white and cold

And now - I'm goin' home

I've lost it all - the years - the find

The girl i loved and left behind

The cold far north's been hard - unkind

And now - I'm goin' home

I'm blind from snow - can't find my way

My body's numb - neat froze I'd say

I'm sleepy now - awake can't stay

At last - I'm goin' home

I'm goin' home

Atchafalaya

The Atchafalaya Basin

The largest swamp of all

From Simmesport down to coastal marsh

Prolific trees grow tall

Majestic cypress everywhere

Draped with Spanish moss

Without their haunting beauty

The change would be our loss

With gators - deer and bear

Fishing here is hard to beat

Enough for all to share

Wildlife - so abundant

Enough for all to share

Bayous - lakes and coves abound

An endless waterway

You'll find a scenic difference

For each ad every day

Blue heron - egrets - eagles

Owls and others too

They spread their wings in gliding flights

They paint the sky - the view

Old forests marked by cypress stumps

Evoke a time now past

Cajun homes - their Pirogues

Built with woods that last

To be here stirs emotions

It lifts the soul - the heart

From sunrise until sunset

Sheer beauty plays its part

This paradise - a gift from God

A jewel for all to see

Preserve it now - forever more

As it was meant to be

Carolyn was the epitome

Of what a life should be

Always there to give a lift

To help us - you and me

You never heard complaints

Upbeat was her style

She was always positive

Could always make you smile

When there were needs by others

She cared for each and all of us

A person you could count on

She cared for each and all of us

As if Sisters and her Brothers

You may not know this

She typed all poetry I wrote

My poems would not be here

Some she liked she'd quote

She is irreplaceable

She had smarts beyond the norm

As a Secretary

All wanted her by storm

When it came to witty

She'd beat you every time

A quick mind - unbeatable

Her thinking was sublime

Gods knows how much we'll miss her

A void that we can't fill

She gave to us much laughter

That was her way - her will

It's hard to write a poem

With all she meant to me

But we all know she's in the place

Where she lived her life to be

Indescribable

The Crochet Ladies

Remembering Carolyn*

Can midnight know

The brightness of day

Can the stars be touched

That light the Milky Way

Can winter's frost

Feel a summer sun

Can life be shared alone

By only one

Can the blind tell

What they cannot see

No more than i can say

What you mean to me

The Crochet Ladies

The Crochet Ladies

The thoughtfulness of your group

Tells of who you are

You are kind and gentle

You touch us from afar

You are appreciated for all you do

There are no words that can say

What we feel for you

Just know you’ve made our day

We hope that you continue

Crocheting as you do

Every stitch you put together

Makes small dreams come true

Thank you, Crochet Ladies

Yo

The thoughtfulness of your group

Tells of who you are

You are kind and gentle

You touch us from afar

You are appreciated for all you do

There are no words that can say

What we feel for you

Just know you’ve made our day

We hope that you continue

Crocheting as you do

Every stitch you put together

Makes small dreams come true

Thank you, Crochet Ladies

You make us old folks proud

Proud to know how much you care

You stand out in life’s crowd
